Tests and Tools Available

What tests do we use?

At Dr. Wanda Eppes & Associates, our office maintains an extensive library of psychological, educational, behavioral, and processing assessments. This allows our evaluators to conduct a detailed and individualized investigation into a student’s learning profile, cognitive abilities, emotional functioning, and developmental needs when appropriate.

Every evaluation is customized to the individual. No student is given all of these tests. The evaluator carefully selects the assessments that best match the student’s age, concerns, symptoms, history, and referral questions. Tests marked with an asterisk (*) are administered by selected providers.

Our goal is to look beyond surface-level struggles and identify the underlying factors impacting learning, behavior, attention, emotional well-being, and academic performance.

Cognitive Ability Assessments

Cognitive testing helps evaluate how a student learns, reasons, solves problems, processes information, and understands the world around them. These assessments can identify intellectual strengths, giftedness, learning disabilities, processing weaknesses, and other developmental concerns.

The following are a few of the cognitive assessments available in our office:

  • Reynolds Intellectual Assessment Scales-2 (RIAS-2)

  • *Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale, Fifth Edition (SB or Binet V)

  • *Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence-IV (WPPSI-IV)

  • Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-V (WISC-V)

  • Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-V (WAIS-V)

  • Woodcock-Johnson Tests of Cognitive Abilities, Fifth Edition (WJ V Cog)

Academic Achievement Assessments

Academic achievement testing measures a student’s performance in areas such as reading, writing, mathematics, comprehension, fluency, spelling, and academic skills. These tests help identify learning gaps, dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, gifted abilities, and other academic concerns.

Some of the academic achievement assessments available include:

  • Bracken Basic Concepts Scale (Bracken)

  • *Feifer Reading

  • *Feifer Math

  • Kaufman Test of Educational Achievement-3 (KTEA-3)

  • Test of Word Reading Efficiency-2 (TOWRE-2)

  • Test of Written Language-4 (TOWL-4)

Cognitive Processing Assessments

Cognitive processing tests examine how the brain receives, interprets, stores, and responds to information. These assessments can help identify difficulties with attention, executive functioning, language processing, auditory processing, memory, visual-motor integration, phonological processing, and other underlying skills that impact learning and daily functioning.

Examples of processing assessments include:

  • Beery-Buktenica Developmental Test of Visual-Motor Integration, Fifth Edition (VMI-5)

  • *Clinical Evaluation of Language Fundamentals-Fifth Edition (CELF-5)

  • Comprehensive Test of Phonological Processing, Second Edition (CTOPP-2)

  • *Lindamood Auditory Conceptualization Test (LAC)

  • Test of Variables of Attention (TOVA)

  • Trails-X

  • Verbal Ability Scales: Expressive or Receptive (VAB:E or VAB:R)

  • Woodcock-Johnson Tests of Cognitive Abilities, Fifth Edition (WJ V Cog)

Behavioral, Emotional, and Personality Questionnaires

Questionnaires and rating scales provide valuable insight into emotional health, behavioral functioning, social skills, sensory concerns, executive functioning, anxiety, depression, ADHD symptoms, autism-related traits, and personality functioning. These tools often include input from parents, teachers, caregivers, and the student when appropriate.

A few of the questionnaires available include:

  • Achenbach System of Empirically Based Assessment (ASEBA)

  • Adaptive Behavior Assessment System-III (ABAS-III)

  • Autism Spectrum Rating Scales (ASRS)

Why Comprehensive Testing Matters

Every child learns differently. A comprehensive evaluation allows us to look at the “whole child” rather than focusing on only one concern. Difficulties with reading, behavior, attention, anxiety, or school performance are often connected to underlying processing, cognitive, emotional, or developmental factors.

By selecting the right combination of assessment tools, our evaluators are able to provide:

  • Diagnostic clarification

  • Identification of learning disabilities

  • ADHD and executive functioning evaluations

  • Autism evaluations

  • Gifted testing

  • Academic recommendations

  • Individualized intervention strategies

  • Accommodation recommendations for school and testing

  • A deeper understanding of a student’s strengths and challenges

Our goal is to provide families with answers, clarity, and practical recommendations that help children and young adults thrive both academically and emotionally.
