Academic Skill Level Evaluation

Academic skill evaluation is useful for home-school students to demonstrate academic progress. It can also be used to pinpoint current academic functioning levels when there is a concern about possible weaknesses. If applying for private schools, or gifted magnet schools, often they wish for this information also. This focus on academic skill levels is insufficient for the diagnosis of SLD (dyslexia, etc.) and you would need our comprehensive evaluation for that purpose.

We use the Woodcock-Johnson, Fourth Edition, Tests of Achievement IV (WJ-4), Wechsler Individual Achievement Test, Fourth Edition (WIAT-4), OR the Kaufman Tests of Educational Achievement-3 (KTEA-3) to evaluate the following areas:

  • Reading decoding (both sight words and phonics-based words)
  • Reading comprehension
  • Math Calculation
  • Math Reasoning
  • Spelling
  • Written Expression
  • Reading, Math, and Writing Fluency (these are simple tasks that are timed for quick performance)
  • Dyslexia Index

The appointment usually takes about two hours for a school age student for this one-on-one evaluation. We encourage the parent to remain in the reception area during testing in order to be available to offer snacks when "breaks" are taken during the appointment.

There is no narrative report as part of this basic service but could be added for an additional charge. You would receive a computerized printout of scores. This printout has age/grade equivalents, Standard Scores, distribution percentiles and the WJ-4 has a Relative Performance Index (a mastery percentile).
